Wealth Can be a Curse

Wealth can be a curse in the light of the story of Qaroon in the Holy Qur'an, if:

1. If one feels that he has earned it because of his own efforts, knowledge and capabilities and not because of the favour of Allah (swt) on him

2. It makes a person self indulgent.

3. It leads to show off and makes a person arrogant.

4. It is acquired by exploiting others.

5. It is not spent on doing good to the needy.

6. It is spent to make mischief in the land.

"O Allah, I seek refuge with Allah from laziness and senility, sins and debts and from the trial of the grave and the punishment of the grave, and from the trial of the Fire and the punishment of the Fire, and from the evil of the trial of wealth. I seek refuge with You from the trial of poverty and I seek refuge with You from the trial of the False Messiah. O Allah, wash my errors from me with snow and hail. Cleanse my heart of errors as You cleanse the white garment of filth. Put a great distance between me and my errors as You put a distance between the east and the west." (Bukhari:6007)

Difference between a Nabi(Prophet) and a Rasool (Messenger)

A Nabi (Prophet) is one to whom Allaah reveals something, and he passes on what Allah has revealed to him. If he is sent with that to those who go against the commandments of Allah, to convey a message from Allah to them, then he is a Rasool(Messenger). But if he follows a Sharee’ah that came before him, and is not himself sent to anyone to convey the message from Allaah to them, then he is a Prophet and not a Messenger.

Hadith and Sunnah

The term Hadith is used to denote a saying, act or tacit approval, validly or invalidly, ascribed to the Prophet (saw).
The Muhadditheen (experts in the science of Hadith criticism) also use the term Taqrir for tacit approval. It means that, in the presence of the Prophet (saw), a believer did something, which the Prophet (saw) noticed but did not disapprove or condemn. Thus, the act done by a believer acquired tacit approval from the Prophet (saw).

Literally the word sunnah means clear, well trodden, busy and plain surfaced road.
The word sunnah in this context denotes the practice of the Prophet (saw) that he taught and practically instituted as a teacher of the sharī‘ah and the best exemplar. This practice is to be adhered to in fulfilling the divine injunctions, carrying out religious rites and moulding life in accord with the will of God. This duty, as the Qur’ān states, was a part of the responsibility of the Prophet (saw) as a Messenger of God:

لَقَدْ مَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْ بَعَثَ فِيهِمْ رَسُولًا مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ يَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِهِ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَإِنْ كَانُوا مِنْ قَبْلُ لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ
Verily Allah has shown grace to the believers by sending to them a messenger of their own who recites to them His verses, and purifies them, and teaches them the law and the wisdom; although before his advent they were in manifest error. (Aale Imran:164)

لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو اللَّهَ وَالْيَوْمَ الْآخِرَ وَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا
You have indeed in the life of the Messenger of Allah the best example; for those who expect meeting Allah and the Last Day and remember Him much. (Al-Ahzaab:21)

The Prophet (saw) set the best example for us in every aspect of life. He not only taught us all religious injunctions and etiquette – that we need to learn and adopt – but also showed us the practice of how to follow and carry them out.

Qur'an: A Mirror

Qur'an is a Book of Law, a Constitution but at the same time it is also a mirror. The way in which a person can see his whole image in the mirror, whatever may be the stage of life he is in, the same holds true for the Holy Qu'ran.It is also a mirror. It is not that we have devised this word, it is mentioned in the Holy Qur'an.Allah says in Surah Al-Anbiya in Ayat No. 10 :

لَقَدْ أَنْزَلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ كِتَابًا فِيهِ ذِكْرُكُمْ

"We have revealed for you (O men!) a book in which is a Message for you."

A Book which tells about your own self, a Book in which you can see your own image.

The people who stand up as the Reformers(Musliheen) in the society are identified by two attributes in the light of the Holy Qur'an:

وَالَّذِينَ يُمَسِّكُونَ بِالْكِتَابِ وَأَقَامُوا الصَّلَاةَ إِنَّا لَا نُضِيعُ أَجْرَ الْمُصْلِحِينَ

"As to those who hold fast by the Book and establish regular prayer;― never shall We suffer the reward of the righteous to perish." (Al-A'raaf:170)

1. They hold fast to the book.

2. They establish regular prayer.

The claim of Building the society and implementing social reforms is one thing but the successful implementation is altogether a different story. Successful implementation can only take palce if the people who have taken up this task possess the qualities mentioned above, otherwise, it would just be a hollow claim which Qur'an describes in following words:

قَالُوا إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُصْلِحُون۔ أَلا إِنَّہُمْ ہُمُ الْمُفْسِدُونَ وَلَکِن لاَّ یَشْعُرُون۔َ

"They say: "Why, we only want to make peace!"Of a surety, they are the ones who make mischief, but they realize (it) not." (Al-Baqarah:11-12 )

Perequisites of Gaining Quranic Treasures

Rejoice you must, in the mercy and blessing and generosity of Allah. Seek you must, for the treasures that await your search herein. But the Qur'an opens its doors only to those who knock with a sense of yearning, a sincerity of purpose and an exclusive attention that befit its importance and majesty. And only those are allowed to gather its treasures, while they walk through it, who are prepared to abandon themselves completely to its guidance and do their utmost to absorb it.

The Qur'an's blessings are limitless, but the measure of your taking from it depends entirely upon the capacity and the suitability of the receptacle you bring to it. So, at the very outset, make yourself more deeply aware of what the Qur'an means to you and what it demands of you; and make a solemn determination to recite the Qur'an in an appropriate manner, so that you may be counted among 'Those whom We have given the Book, they recite it as it ought to be recited; it is they who believe in it' (al-Baqarah 2: 121).

Four Sacred Months

In the name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful

"Verily, the number of months with Allaah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allaah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islamic calendar). That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein" (Tawbah 9:36)

ثَلَاثَةٌ مُتَوَالِيَاتٌ: ذُو الْقَعْدَةِ وَذُو الْحِجَّةِ وَالْمُحَرَّمُ وَرَجَبُ مُضَرَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ جُمَادَى وَشَعْبَان
The Prophet said regarding the four sacred months, "Three are in succession; Dhul-Qa`dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram, and (the fourth is) Rajab of (the tribe of) Mudar which comes between Jumada (Ath-Thani) and Sha`ban. (Al Bukhaari (4662) and Muslim (1679): Narrated from Abu Bakrah (may Allaah be pleased with him))
The Prophet said "Rajab of Mudar'' to attest to the custom of Mudar, in saying that Rajab is the month that is between Jumada and Sha`ban, not as the tribe of Rabi`ah thought, that it is between Sha`ban and Shawwal, which is Ramadan in the present calendar.
The four Sacred Months were made four, three in succession and one alone, so that the Hajj and `Umrah are performed with ease.

Dhul-Qa`dah, the month before the Hajj month, was made sacred because tribes refrained from fighting during that month and people start to travel for Hajj.

Dhul-Hijjah, the next month, was made sacred because it is the month of Hajj, during which Hajj rituals are performed.

Muharram, which comes next, was made sacred so that people are able to go back to their areas in safety after performing Hajj.

Rajab, in the middle of the lunar year, was made sacred so that those coming from the farthest areas of Arabia are able to perform `Umrah and visit the House of Allah and then go back to their areas safely.

Me'raj (Holy Ascension) of the Prophet Muhammad(saw))

Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al- Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing. (Surah Al-Isra:1)

By the Star when it goes down. Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire. It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: He was taught by one mighty in Power, Endued with Wisdom: For he appeared (in stately form). While he was in the highest part of the horizon: Then he approached and came closer, And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant - (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw? Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: Near it is the Garden of Abode. Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!). (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! (Al-Najm: 1-18)

At an age of fifty two, probably on 27th Rajab, before the year of the Hijrah (migration) from which the Muslim calendar began, the Prophet’s Meraj or ascension took place; This was an important milestone in the life of Prophet Muhammad, PBUH, and also a highly significant reminder to us of the special gift from Allah of the minimum five-times daily prayers.

a) On that day, Allah, swt, honored prophet Muhammad, PBUH, by transporting him to the heavens and showing him a panorama of the cosmos, where Allah also tutored him in various sciences.

b) On that day, Prophet Muhammad was mandated that Muslims should pray a minimum of five-times daily salat, reduced from the original 50 times.

c) On that day, an important conversation took place between Allah, swt, and Prophet Muhammad, PBUH, which is rehearsed many times daily by millions of Muslims all over the world, soon after they sit down after the second prostration (sajdah) to recite the tashahhud (Declaration of Faith), also called A-tahiyyat (greetings), because Prophet Muhammad, PBUH, brought greetings to Allah, swt, on behalf of himself and also on behalf of his followers.

Ramadhan Checklist

I came across this checklist by chance, unfortunately I do not know whom to give the credits for it, but I thought I might share it with the readers of this blog.

1. Make a resolve to win the maximum favour of Allah: perform extra voluntary prayers (Nawaafil), make frequent Du'a and increase remembrance (Dhikr).

2. Try to recite some Qu'ran after every Prayer. In fact if you read 3-4 pages after every Prayer you can easily finish the entire Quran in Ramadan! Study the Quranic Tafseer (commentary) every morning.

3. Invite a person you are not very close with to your home for Iftar, at least once a week. You will notice the blessings in your relationships!

4. Bring life to your family! Everyday, try to conclude the fast with your family and spend some quality time together to understand each other better.

5. Commit to an Islamic study circles to enhance your Islamic knowledge and practice. Plan to complete reading a book on Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) life in these 30 days.

6. Donate generously to the masajid, Islamic organizations, and any where people are in need. "This is a month of sharing!"

7. Seek the rare and oft-neglected rewards of 'the night better than a 1000 months', Laylatul-Qadr.

8. Weep in private for the forgiveness of your sins: It is the month of forgiveness and Allah's Mercy! It's never too late.

9. Learn to control your tongue and lower your gaze. Remember the Prophet's warning that lying, backbiting, and a lustful gaze all violate the fast! Abandon foul language forever.

10. Encourage others to enjoin and love goodness, and to abandon everything evil. Play the role of a Da'ee (one who invites to Allah) with passion and sympathy.

11. Experience the joy of Tahajjud prayers late at night and devote yourself purely and fully to Allah in the I'tikaf retreat during the last 10 days of Ramadan.

2. The high regard in which man is held in God’s universe is manifested in the divine will to declare man a vicegerent on earth and in the symbolic gesture of ordering the angels to prostrate themselves before him, and the subsequent condemnation of Iblīs who refused to join them.

3. Elevates man above all other beings and forbids his subjugation or humiliation for the sake of material achievement

4. Achievements must not come at a price that would undermine fundamental human values, or at the expense of man’s dignity or integrity.

5. Man, rather than the means of production or distribution, is the force of change on this earth; he influences and alters the course of all life on it.

6. This view of man is easily distinguished from, and vastly superior to, the feeble and negative role assigned to him by materialistic philosophies.

7. Islam aims to always guide man towards a decent and moral life.
Production, consumerism and the satisfaction of man’s carnal instincts and desires are not all that life is about.

Quranic Definition of Taqwa

Allah (swt) has defined Taqwa in The Glorious Qur'an in a very clear cut manner.
According to Verse no. 177 of Surah Al-Baqarah, Taqwa is:

1. To believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers.
2. To spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves
3. To be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity
4. To fulfil the contracts which ye have made
5. To firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of conflicts.

Put yourselves on this scale and measure your level of Taqwa

Seeking Forgiveness From Allah

"And those who cry not unto any other god along with Allah, nor take the life which Allah hath forbidden save in (course of) justice, nor commit adultery - and whoso doeth this shall pay the penalty; (68) The doom will be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein disdained for ever; (69) Save him who repenteth and believeth and doth righteous work; as for such, Allah will change their evil deeds to good deeds. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful. (70) [Quran 25:68-70]

Allahuma innaka 'afuwwun karimun tuhibbul 'afwa fa ‘afu anni

What is Zuhd..???

Ibn Taymiyyah said: Zuhd is to leave alone those things which will not benefit you in the next life.
Sufyaan Ath-Thawri said: Zuhd is to have limited amount of expectations: it does not mean eating poor or inadequate foods as many think or wearing a cheap gown or cloak.
Ibn Ja’laal said: Zuhd is to know that life is a temporary one that will pass away; it should not be magnified in ones heart, nor should much focus be placed on it. Rather one should turn away from it; it is said Zuhd means to refrain from this world, without showing off.
Al Ju’nayd said: Zuhd means to free the heart from always wanting
Ahmad Ibn Hanbal said: Zuhd is not to have too many expectations.
Ibn Mubaarak said: It is having trust in Allaah and being content in times of poverty.
Abdulwaahid Ibn Zaid said: Zuhd can be practised by a person even if he only possesses one dinaar or dirham.
Ad-Daa’rani said: Zuhd means to leave those things that distract you from Allaah the exalted and high.
Hassan Al-Basri said: Zuhd is not that you make the permissible (things) impermissible or by wasting ones money. But, rather Zuhd is that you acknowledge that what Allaah the exalted has (destined for you) is better than what you have.

The intelligent person is the one who constantly performs self-assessment on his deeds, and ensures that all his actions are geared for his life after death. On the other hand, a careless person is one who follows his wanton desires, but at the same time wishes all good rewards from Allah.

Obedience At Its Best

"When he (Isma'il) grew enough to work with him, he (Ibrahim) said, "My son, I see in a dream that I am sacrificing you. What do you think?" He said, "O my father, do what you are commanded to do. You will find me, GOD willing, patient."(Al-Saffat, 37:102)

This event is the example of Islam in its highest essence. The affection of the father was severely tested, when Abraham was called to sacrifice his son, and not stand by and watch others sacrifice his son. He had to subdue his own sense of affection, mercy, love, and any loving attachment-sentiments which reside in every father towards his only and beloved child.

On the other hand, Ismael's love for himself was also challenged. The faith of both was challenged. And this dared them to respond to the subjection of one's affections for one's own child (Abraham), and the killing of one's feelings towards himself (Ismael). They both succeeded in this.

Is it possible to emulate this submission and obedience?

A Balanced Life

He [Nuh (a.s.] said. “O my people, Indeed I am to you a clear warner, [saying], ‘Worship Allah, fear Him and obey me’…” [Nuh: 3]

The heart is the focal point of a human body. And it is in the heart where Taqwa resides, which is displayed through good actions.

The Prophet ﷺ said, “At-Taqwa Haahunaa [Taqwa is here]” pointing towards the heart. Similarly, if we imagine a balance, Taqwa would be its central part. And the two sides would be the practical manifestation of Taqwa - Worship of Allah and Obedience of the Messenger. Both these aspects go hand in hand and develop in a person the quality of Allah consciousness - Taqwa. It also brings about balance in a person’s life. Therefore, it is necessary for a person who opts for this quality to worship Allah the way He taught His servants in the Qur’an and Sunnah, and to follow the way of the Messenger ﷺin the true sense.

Repent, For Allah is Merciful

"Allah the Almighty has said: 'O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me, and hope in Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds in the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I shall forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with an earthful of sins and were you then to face Me, without having associated anything with Me, I shall grant you an earthful of pardon."

The Final Judgement

Thus then, if he be of those Nearest to Allah,
(There is for him) Rest and Satisfaction, and a Garden of Delights.
And if he be of the Companions of the Right Hand
(For him is the salutation) “Peace be unto thee”, from the Companions of the Right Hand.
And if he be of those who treat (truth) as Falsehood, who go wrong
For him is Entertainment with Boiling Water,
And burning in Hell-Fire.
Verily, this is the Very Truth and Certainty.
So celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme. (Al-Waqi'ah : 88-96)

Spending in the Way of Allah

The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the Way of Allah, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allah gives manifold increase to whom He pleases. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knower. (Al-Baqarah:261)

The Reality of Life

Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children, as the likeness of vegetation after rain, thereof the growth is pleasing to the tiller; afterwards it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw. But in the Hereafter (there is) a severe torment (for the disbelievers, evil-doers), and (there is) Forgiveness from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure (for the believers, good-doers), whereas the life of this world is only a deceiving enjoyment. Ten Things We Waste

1. Our Knowledge

Wasted by not taking action with it.

2. Our Actions:

Wasted by committing them with out sincerity.

3. Our Wealth:

Wasted by using on things that will not bring us ajr. We waste our money, our status, our authority, on things which have no benefit in this life or in akhirah.

4. Our Hearts:

Wasted because they are empty from the love of Allah, and the feeling of longing to go to Him, and a feeling of peace and contentment. In it’s place, our hearts are filled with something or someone else.

5. Our Bodies:

Wasted because we don’t use them in ibadah and service ofAllah.

6. Our Love:

Our emotional love is misdirected, not towards Allah, but towards something/someone else.

7. Our Time:

Wasted, not used properly, to compensate for that which had passed, by doing what is righteous to make up for past deeds.

8. Our Intellect:

Wasted on things that are not beneficial, that are detremental to society and the individual, not in contemplation or reflection.

9. Our Service:

Wasted in service of someone who will not bring us closer to Allah, or benefit in dunyaa.

10. Our Dhikr:

Wasted, because it does not effect us or our hearts.

You must accept that tazkiya is a highly personal process and that it demands taking personal responsibility for carrying it forward. You can only see the results of tazkiya through your own realisation, your own personal efforts and your own exertions.

2. Genuine Effort
In order to succeed, you must have a deep desire to make a genuine effort to fulfill your obligations as a Muslim. With desire, of course, come actions.

3. Sustaining Willpower
To achieve the ultimate goal in life requires a sustained determination to do so, a willpower that is forever responsive and strong. In Quranic terminology this is called irada.

4. Reliance on Allah
Self-confidence is borne from the Believer's intimate knowledge and understanding that Allah is ever ready to assist those who strive and struggle in His way. Self-confidence comes from depending upon Allah and knowing that He is there to help you, protect you and shower His mercies upon you.

5. The Best Use of Time
Time is not money or gold; it is life and it is limited. You must begin to appreciate every moment of your life and always strive to make the best use of it.

6. Tazkiya -All-embracing Process
Tazkiya must encompass our entire life - the privacy of our thoughts as well as their social manifestations in our daily life. Everything must be in conformity with Allah's will.

I want to share with you an insight which I got from Moulana Muhammad Farooq Khan.

Moulana Muhammad Farooq Khan is the member of Majlis-e-Numaindgan (central council of representatives) of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. He is one of the old vanguards of the Tahreek-e-Islami and resides in Delhi. He has written a lot of books in Urdu and Hindi. He is well versed in both the languages. He has translated Quran in Hindi. But his magnum opus is Kalam-e-Nubuwat, a collection of Ahadith in five, six volumes. He could be easily termed as the living legend in the field of Islamic literature.
I have met him on two occasions. Once when he delivered a lecture in an all India SIO meet. Next in his room in the second storey of an non-descript building in Old Delhi. It was a brief meeting but It was a memorable evening.

What he said could be summed up as the following:

There are three essential needs which mould a personality. Without fulfilling this needs one cannot become a wholesome personality.
The three needs are as follows.

First, You ought to have something to DO
One cannot remain idle. It is not human nature to remain idle. Man has to do something. Idle mind is devil's workshop. Men do various things. Men get engaged in various occupations to keep themselves occupied. The list of trades, professions, crafts, jobs and careers never ends.
But the best thing to do is to do dawah. The best career option is to get engaged in Dawah.

Second, You ought to have something to LOVE
One cannot live with profession, job or business alone. Day in and day out you do a lot of things. But that is not sufficient to nourish your inner soul. Your heart longs to love and to be loved. Naturally men love. Their love knows no bounds. Men love their wives, their sweet little children, their apparels, their face, their language, their organisation, their country, their matinee idol and the list goes on.
But the best of them is the love towards God. Love of God is the supreme thing in life. It is the ultimate. You have to research and find out whom does God love? And strive to become one. Besides you should love your Creator more than anything and everything in this mundane life.

Third, You ought to have something to HOPE
Man exists because of his hope. He may do a lot of things. He may love his job. He may be passionate about many things. But still he needs something to hope. Why does he work? Why does he go to faraway lands? Why does he do so many things? Because of Hope. Because of hope that one day he would get a beautiful palace overlooking the sea shore. Of hope that he would be driving in the latest model of car. Of hope that his offsprings would get decent education. The list of hopes and dreams is simply endless.
But the best thing to hope is hope of falah in the Hereafter.

I still remember the day when Moulana Farooq Khan Sahib conveyed this message in his own style; in his own choice of sweetest, chaste words in Urdu. Br Shabeer Ahmed, present Ameer-e-Halqa and Br Muhammad Yahya of AIITA were with me. I remember the haste with which I jostled down the words in an old diary.

Moulana gave me the diary as I asked him paper to take notes. The diary with notes is with me. I will share with you the other notes, some other day, Insha Allah.

For them there is Hell, as a couch (below) and folds and folds of covering above: such is Our requital of those who do wrong (Al Quran 7:41)

إِنَّهُ مَن يَأْتِ رَبَّهُ مُجْرِمًا فَإِنَّ لَهُ جَهَنَّمَ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحْيى

Verily he who comes to his Lord as a sinner (at Judgment),- for him is Hell: therein shall he neither die nor live (Al Quran 20:74)

إِذَا رَأَتْهُم مِّن مَّكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ سَمِعُوا لَهَا تَغَيُّظًا وَزَفِيرًا

When it sees them from a place fAr off, they will hear its fury and its ranging sigh (Al Quran 25:12).

Sirajul Hasan has done it.
I always believed, hoped and expected that he alone could do it.
Siraj Bhai, Siraj Sahib, Sirajul Hasan as he is affectionately called by everybody is the chief editor of Samarasam Tamil Fortnightly.
He is a prolific writer in Tamil and master player of words. Over the years he has developed his own style of conveying his thoughts. It could be described as simply endearing. He is in the field for the past three decades. He was groomed by late Moulana M. A. Jameel Ahmed. He has written three books and a collection of short stories. He is the most soft spoken man in the earth. But he is very shrewd in equal measure. Measure your words when you speak with him.
Now what has he done?

He has written an open letter to A. R. Rahman, the music wizard of Chennai. He has lauded ARR for his achievement. He has expressed his joy, pleasure in his own way. A.R Rahman had declared "Yella pugazhum Allahvukke" (All glory be to Allah!!) at the dias of Oscar arena.
Sirajul Hasan has lauded this spontaneous reaction of the Music maestro. Then he explains the significance of Alhumdulillah...!
Slowly and steadily he has woven the web and highlighted the drastic consequences of Shirk-Inai vaippu.
A.R. Rahman is known to be very particular in offering Namaz in time. Sirajul Hasan mentions this and praises the enthusiasm shown by ARR in offering Namaz. Then he goes on elaborating the significance and importance of the ultimate success - the success in Hereafter.
The final appeal from Siraj is what makes your heart melt.
His words are:

isai vazhiyil payaniththu immaiyin sigarangalai ththottu vitteergal
ini-
irai vazhiyil payaniththu marumaiyin vetrigalai pera muyalungal.

It could be roughly translated as "You have reached the zenith of glory in the path of Music.

Oh! I miss Br P. H. Shafeeq Ahmed, the lanky lad from the dusty town of Tirupattur. He is also a gifted writer. Shafeeq writes in English.
More than a decade ago, Ace director Manirathinam produced a stupendously stupid film "Roja" depicting Muslims in a very bad light. At that time too Sirajul Hasan wrote an open letter to Mani Rathinam. The finishing lines of that letter are still embedded in my mind "Today what you have in your hands is a stone..! I pray and hope that a day will come when the stone would be replaced by a flower"
Br Shafeeq translated the letter in English and it was published in Radiance Views weekly, Delhi.
I wish I had Shafeeq at my side. He would have translated the piece in English in no time.
As my hands are full I could not do it by myself. If somebody reading this, wishes to translate in English, he is most welcome.

Life is an opportunity to courageously take up Jihad, or struggle to master ourselves so that we comply with the will of Allah. This is the route to fulfillment wherein we may lift up our hands in order to worship Allah, receiving His blessings and eternal mercy. Those of us who choose to master ourselves while trusting in Allah have nothing within this world or beyond it to fear.
As Muslims we tend to forget what the title entails, that of “Muslim” – what does it mean? And why is the definition so important to remember?
A Muslim is one who peacefully submits his or her will, his or her ‘self’ to God. We surrender ourselves to God, giving up attachments that take away from loving and worshipping Him as best as we can.
What better Jihad is there than that against what detaches you from Allah?

We all say we love Allah, but are we showing Him – are we truly struggling to free ourselves from selfish attachments?

Prophet Muhammad (saw.waw) teaches that, “For everything there is an appropriate way of polishing. The heart is polished through zikr-the remembrance of Allah.”

Allah has declared that He is, “close to the thought that My servant has of Me. I am with him whenever he recollects Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I remember him in Myself. If he approaches Me by as much as on hand’s length, I approach him by a mile. If he stumbles towards Me, I run toward him.”
Wherever you find yourself, whether in worship or in an ordinary moment of your daily life, remember Allah.
Our hearts shall only find complete peace in the remembrance of Allah, so we should seek Him not just during our most trying moments, but even in our most happiest.

There is nothing greater than the struggle to stay close to Allah in worship and devotion – we all commit ourselves to an array of unimportant things during our daily lives, yet when was the last time we devoted time to remember Allah?
Prayer is a given for any Muslim who prays, but what else have we done to remember Allah?; to master ourselves against what separates us from Him.
Embarking on Jihad does not always involve a weapon of manmade qualities but ones of a more spiritual nature – replacing a glistening bullet with the sword of Tawheed and an ear shattering cannon with the volcanic eruption of Zikr.
We must learn to transform our everyday lives into adventures of spiritual awakening – the greater Jihad “against the lower self”.

Waste no time in struggling against what detaches you from Allah,
Waste no time in fighting off the toxins of the world – money,greed,envy,lust
Waste no time in striking the enemies of worship who consume you for even brief moments

Do it now, while you are still able,
While you are blessed with your sight – by which you can read His perfected revelation
Before your eyes grown dim and barren.
While you are blessed with your strength – by which you may defeat the enemies of worship
Before your body grows weak.

Do it now, while you are still able
Because sleep is a silent death each and every night,
And when your eyes are blessed with the ability to flutter in the early morning
Rise with the awareness that you will not live long.

Qualification Test

Test. The word itself rings an alarm in the back of the mind that something/somebody is under some kind of analysis to make it/him qualify for the requirement under consideration. I bought a mobile and tested the clarity of sound, quality of picture, user friendliness, battery backup, memory space and the most important is the comments and experience of the user who have already used it. It is not just in case of mobile, when we decide to do or believe something we take all sort of measure be it buying a home, going to movie, planning a tour each and everything.

One fine day when I was in my imaginary world I decided to sort out the criteria to test the God. I wanted to see whether the God whom I believe is cable of being God? Is he really be worshiped as God? I tried to sort out the test criteria from the experience of the ancestor, the various philosophers, the religious books then I have selected the best of the test from all the above and it was from the Guiding Quran. Why I call Quran as a Guide because it perfectly guided me to phrase the test to test someone who claims to be God.

The test is..

1. He should be one.
2.He Should be Absolute.
3.He Should not have an Start nor an End (Never did He beget. Nor was He begotten)
4.No one should be equal to him.

Anyone who claims to be a God should pass all these four question then only I will consider him as a God and Worship him.

The Guiding Quran Answers all the above four questions in Sura Ikhlaas 112

1. Proclaim, "He is the One and only GOD.

2. "The Absolute GOD.

3. "Never did He beget. Nor was He begotten.

4. "None equals Him."

There is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab and for a non-Arab over an Arab, nor for the white over the black nor for the black over the white except in God-consciousness"

Repentance

Anas bin Malik reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Allah is more pleased with the repentance of a servant as he turns towards Him for repentance than this that one amongst you is upon the camel in a waterless desert and there is upon (that camel) his provision of food and drink also and it is lost by him, and he having lost all hope (to get tbat) lies down in the shadow and is disappointed about his camel and there he finds that camel standing before him. He takes hold of his nosestring and then out of boundless joy says: 0 Lord, Thou art my servant and I am Thine Lord. He commits this mistake out of extreme delight. [Sahih Muslim - 6618]

The Tragedy of Kerbala

Corresponding to 10th October 680 AD, Imam Husain with 72 family members and disciples were martyred in the scorching desert of central Iraq on Friday 10th Moharram, 61Hijri.

Historians rightfully state Imam Husain and his companions to have braved severe hunger and thirst for three consecutive days before facing inhuman atrocities by armies of Yazid bin Muaviya, emperor of the Islamic State at the time (680-683 AD). Thus the prevailing fact is, when conscience, consciousness and conviction preponderate over material being, physical discomfiture and needs, cease to affect human kind.

Imam Husain with an enlightened heart, sincerely refuse to acknowledge Yazid and his abettors’ conspicuous licentious and sinful activities. Later, amidst thousands of adversaries, he expostulated by initiating and appealing for re-adopting conventional ethical and religious norms people had deviated from.

Apparently, it is such victory of spiritual righteousness over material falsehood that Imam Husain procured in Kerbala, which has largely been an inspiration for mankind.

Day of 'Ashura'

'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, reported:the Quraish used to fast on the Day of 'Ashura' in the pre-Islamic days and the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) also observed it. When he migrated to Medina, he himself observed this Fast (of 'Ashura') and commanded (others) to observe it. But when fasting during the month of Ramadan was made obligatory he said: He who wishes to observe this Fast may do so, and he who wishes to abandon it may do so. [Sahih Muslim 1897]

Ibn ‘Abbas, (RA), reported: “The Prophet, came to al-Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked them about that”. They replied, “This is a good day, the day on which Allah rescued Bani Israel from their enemy. So Moosa observed fast on this day.” The Prophet said, “We have more claim over Moosa than you.” So the Prophet, observed fast on that day and ordered (the Muslims) to observe fast (on that day).” [Saheeh al-Bukhari, Muslim]

Ibn ‘Abbas also reported, “The Messenger of Allah fasted on the day of Ashura and ordered the people to fast on it. The people said, “O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that the Jews and Christians honour.” The Prophet, said, “When the following year comes - Allah willing - we shall fast on the ninth.” The death of the Prophet, came before the following year.” [Saheeh Muslim, Abu Dawood]

So it is recommended to fast on the 10th of Muharram and the 9th along with it as well.

The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) has continued its military operation -- code-named "Cast Lead" -- against the Gaza Strip for the seventh consecutive day. Air raids and attacks from ground forces and naval vessels have continued to target civilian objects. There has been an increase in the air raids targeting houses of resistance members. The number of people who have been killed in IOF's attacks has reached 353, including 59 children and 14 women. This figure reflects only the cases which Al Mezan Center has been able to verify, and is expected to rise as many casualties were buried by their families without being registered at hospitals and others remain under the rubble of destroyed buildings. Many attacks targeted open fields, though not far from urban areas. IOF also targeted another rescue team in Deir al-Balah.

At approximately 2:40pm yesterday, Thursday 1 January 2008, Israeli aircrafts fired heavy missiles at the house of Nizar Rayyan, a leader in the Hamas movement, in the Jabaliya refugee camp, causing massive destruction in the camp and killing 16 of its residents, 11 of whom were children.

At approximately 11:35pm on the same day, Israeli aircraft raided the al-Khulafa Mosque, which is located near Rayyan's house, destroying the mosque completely and damaging tens of houses in the area, some for the second time on the same day.

Al Mezan Center for Human Rights expresses its outrage over the continued inaction of the international community in the face of IOF's continued violations of the international humanitarian law (IHL) and human rights in the Gaza Strip. The failure to take any action continues despite the enormous amount of information about the consequences of Israel's conduct towards human life and well being in the Strip, which have been heavily reported by the media and human rights organizations in the Strip. Reports also indicate that the health system is close to collapse as hospitals and clinics suffer a very high case load while there are shortages in medical supplies and personnel. The high numbers of casualties resulting from Israeli attacks has added enormous pressure on the health system.

Al Mezan Center asserts that according to its continuous monitoring of the situation in Gaza, Israel has been perpetrating grave breaches of IHL, amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity, by deliberately targeting civilian premises in highly dense areas without observing the principles of proportionality, distinction and military necessity. In doing so, Israel is showing despicable disregard to civilian life.

The Islamic calendar (Hijra calendar) is a purely lunar calendar. It contains 12 months that are based on the motion of the moon, and because 12 synodic months is only 12 x 29.53=354.36 days, the Islamic calendar is consistently shorter than a tropical year, and therefore it shifts with respect to the Christian calendar. The calendar is based on the Qur'an (9:36-37)

The Islamic Calendar, which is based purely on lunar cycles, was first introduced in 638 C.E. by the close companion of the Prophet (PBUH) and the second Caliph, `Umar ibn Al-Khattab (592-644 C.E. He did it in an attempt to rationalize the various, at times conflicting, dating systems used during his time. `Umar consulted with his advisors on the starting date of the new Muslim chronology. It was finally agreed that the most appropriate reference point for the Islamic calendar was the Hijrah. The actual starting date for the Calendar was chosen (on the basis of purely lunar years, counting backwards) to be the first day of the first month (1 MuHarram) of the year of the Hijrah. The Islamic (Hijri) calendar (with dates that fall within the Muslim Era) is usually abbreviated A.H. in Western languages from the latinized Anno Hegirae, "in the year of the Hegira". MuHarram 1, 1 A.H. corresponds to July 16, 622 C.E.
The Hijrah, which chronicles the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Makkah to Madinah in September 622 C.E., is the central historical event of early Islam. It led to the foundation of the first Muslim city-state, a turning point in Islamic and world history.

The current Islamic Year is 1430 AH, from approximately December 28, 2008 (evening) to December 17, 2009 (evening).

Prophet Mohammed (Peace be upon him ) Said:

murder as the second of the major sins, and he even warned that on the Day of Judgment, {The first cases to be adjudicated between people on the Day of Judgment will be those of bloodshed.}

Muslims are even encouraged to be kind to animals and are forbidden to hurt them. Once the Prophet Muhammad said: {A woman was punished because she imprisoned a cat until it died. On account of this, she was doomed to Hell. While she imprisoned it, she did not give the cat food or drink, nor did she free it to eat the insects of the earth.}

Quranic Concept of Character.
People inhabiting different countries might follow different ways of life but, according to the Holy Quran, human values are the same anywhere and unchangeable too. It is not given, however, to human intellect to determine such values. Human intellect is essentially individualistic in character. It can seek preservation of the particular self to which it belongs individually or collectively, but not that of the other selves. For the well-being and preservation of mankind as a whole, however, what is needed is not an individualistic intellect, which cannot see beyond its nose, but a comprehensive and all pervading intellect, namely God and Revelation. It is Revelation alone which gives abiding universal values. The revealed values are preserved in the Holy Quran, the code of life for mankind in all climes and ages. Quranic values are Permanent Values of life and provide a universal standard of character or, to use Quranic terminology, Taqwa.

“O believers, be you securers of justice. If you are summoned as a witness, be a witness for God regardless of your relationship with the parties, whether your evidence culminates yourself or goes against your parents and kinsmen and whether the party affected is rich or poor. God’s Law is the best protector for the rich and the poor. God stands closest to either and claims that you be true to Him in preference to every one else. Let not caprice, personal gain, demands of relationship or regard for riches swerve you from the path of justice. Also in tendering evidence, neither twist your statement nor avoid any, remembering always that God is aware of the things you do”, (4/135).

Hadith About Character
Hadrat Abu Darda, may Allah be pleased with him, relates that the Holy Prophet Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, “Nothing is heavier in the scales of a believer on the Day of Judgement than his good behaviour. Allah detests a person who is obscene and shameless”. (Tirmidhi)

Muslims are forgiving to others as was shown by Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam. There was one incident when the Prophet went to Taif to preach but the people stoned him. Then the angels of the mountain came to the Prophet and asked him if they should crush the people of Taif with the mountains surrounding the valley, but the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam said “no”, and he said that he is Rahmatul-lil-’Aalameen (mercy for all the worlds). He also said maybe those people would one day believe in Allah and have a change of heart.
